{My Former High-Energy Office / Play Room}

In our previous home, I wanted to convert our office from a typical work space to an incredibly energizing work and play room, and that I did with the almost electrifying green paint color! While I’m not planning on going as bold with wall colors in my next home, I will definitely continue to layer in surprising pops of color all over! Below you will see the gallery of images from our room makeover including before and after pictures and the ever-present DIY projects!

The first project was the {DIY Floating Shelves} that my husband did a stellar job designing and constructing! I showed him what I wanted to achieve and he nailed it! They are sturdier and longer than the IKEA shelves I could have ordered and I saved $100 in shipping {and I’m not kidding!} by having them constructed for me at home! These are eight feet long and constructed with 2×4’s as the base, reinforced with long anchors. Since we used the room as a play room for our baby as well, we wanted to make sure the shelves stood the test of time–or at least the pressure our toddler could apply if he tugged on them or lined up toys on them!

OK, so I never got around to adding all of the “best” pictures” or finding the “best” layout, but I was off to a great start before we up and sold our house! {(Yes, that is a stock photo of a sailboat, you little smartypants!}

This DIY is easy to do! Just buy floral foam and faux succulents (or real succulents if you will have better direct lighting than I did on this wall) and plan out your arrangement. Then install and you’re done! A few years ago, I bought the “Big Happy Family” Urbio garden online after I saw it on HGTV in Sabrina Soto’s chic New York apartment! You can also use it for office supplies in your office, supply storage in a kids’ room or nursery, and more! LOVE this product and how transitional it is, and who would’ve thought it got its start on KickStarter? Those success stories are the best!

Modern Desk Armoire - {My Former Office / Play Room}
Modern Desk Armoire – {My Former Office / Play Room}

I’m pleased to say I designed this modern desk armoire myself, and then my uncle’s contemporary wood furniture store built it! It was constructed based off of the specs from my husband’s drawing of the piece once I outlined my design. The doors are attached by actual piano hinges since they are so long and heavy! I love the collaboration, and most of all, I love that it was a gift from my dear Grandma Beth…commemorating my graduation from high school, college and also my wedding!

This big beauty will have a place of honor in our next home because I had the architect add a niche in the office; where some would place a China hutch or a buffet table in their dining room or others may place art in their office, I will place my modern desk armoire that has sentimental value! The white interior features top shelving for organization and decor, a lit desktop surface for my sizable iMac, a pullout keyboard tray, a pullout filing drawer for hanging folders, a pullout tray for our all-in-one printer/scanner/copier and sleek blank side doors perfect for white erase boards, a cork board, etc.!

Lastly, above is the before picture. As you can see, in this room we went from traditional to mod with a complete overhaul of the space! While the green hue wasn’t for everybody I’m sure, it sure was fun for me to take a chance with color and live, work and play boldly!
